4H/FFA Market Animal Show
This past Thursday, I attended the 61st 4H/FFA Market Animal Show here in Augusta County. This show is the largest (and possibly the longest running) show of its kind east of the Mississippi. What a wonderful and exciting event! Seeing these young folks raise these animals and compete to win awards and then sell them at auction is truly a joy to watch. My family has supported this show for the last 16 years. My own children showed lambs and steers for several years in the mid-90's. Agriculture still forms the backbone of the economy here in the Shenandoah Valley. Since the settlers at Jamestown made their first commercial shipment of tobacco to England in 1614, agriculture has played an important role in the Commonwealth's rich heritage. The hardy Scots-Irish immigrants that populated the Valley in the 1700's left us a wonderful legacy - one that is continued by their descendants to this very day.Now, the best part of the whole event - in a couple of weeks, I'll attend the awards banquet in Mount Solon where I will enjoy some of the best barbequed lamb in the South!
